Wild Things Character List

Zoe: A young and wild spirited girl of eleven who lost her mother. She had always been on her own since her mother was not always responsible for her. Very mature and brave for her age, Zoe learns to trust others and let others, like her Uncle Henry, take care of her. Her wild nature makes her seem rash but her maturity is far beyond her age. Zoe has some important loves to remember: writing, reading, solitude, animals and the outdoors.
Henry Royster: Zoe’s kind and loving uncle who takes her in after he finds out that she had lost her mother. He was once a doctor but after losing his wife, he moved on to practice what he really loves, art. He is a sculptor and still works as a volunteer doctor around town. (15)
Owen: Zoe’s father and Henry’s half brother. (61)

Fred: He is Bessie’s husband and Henry’s childhood friend. He works as Henry’s grounds keeper and does a lot of the house work for Henry. He also enjoys gardening and uses it as an art form. (38)
Bessie: Fred’s wife who is bedridden and in need of a heart transplant. She enjoys quilting and has an uncanny ability to read Zoe’s mind and moods. She also believes that she should not get a heart transplant, even though it could save her life, because she would not be the same person with someone else’s heart. (51)

Sheriff Bean: The town sheriff who has been friends with Henry and Fred since childhood. We learned that Henry and Fred saved his life when he was a young boy and about to drown in a lake. (48)

Padre: The leader of the congregation in the town of Sugar Hill. He is good friends with Bessie, Fred and Henry. (51)

Ms. Avery: Zoe’s fifth grade teacher who supports Zoe’s writing skills and her love for reading. (73)

Hargrove: The Mayor’s son who is a classmate of Zoe’s. Zoe notices that he would carry a notebook with him and later finds out that it was full of drawings. He would stare at Zoe a lot when she started going to school and he also stole Zoe’s journal and destroyed her cabin. (75)

Lillian and Sid: A brother and sister team who buy art from Henry. They come to visit Henry
one day and annoy him and everyone else.

Mr. C’mere: The wild cat that Zoe learns to love and he learns to trust her.

Maud Booker:  Zoe’s grandmother who is also a town vet and Henry’s neighbor. She shows up on Henry’s doorstep and says that she wanted to meet Zoe since the whole town said she was a wild child. She also helps Zoe out and tells her how to heal Mr. C’mere’s infected ear.

The White Deer:  This animal is what Zoe and many others try to conserve in the forest.

Augustus: Henry’s father who was not supportive of his interest in art. He only wanted Henry to be a doctor and for him he did become a doctor.

Ray: A friend of Zoe’s mother. He was not very nice to Zoe and goes and finds her one day to just make money. He claims he has memorabilia of Zoe’s mother and wants her uncle Henry to pay him for it.

Manny:  A friend of Zoe’s mother who used to take her to the racetrack and let her bet on horses because she was good at picking winners. (31-32)

Lester: A friend of Zoe’s mother. He worked nights at a veterinarian’s office and would take Zoe with him. His mother also taught Zoe how to read and write. (40)

Charlie:  A friend of Zoe’s mother. He used to have Zoe read to his mother and Zoe learned about memoirs and murder mysteries from her. (31-32)

Harlan:  A friend of Zoe’s mother who did ultimately care about Zoe. He finds her through a newspaper article that said she lived with her uncle Henry. He goes to find her on Thanksgiving Day and then later confesses to Zoe that he had always had the best intentions for her. He even tried to find a way legally to take Zoe away from her mother because he saw the danger she was in.

Mrs. Wilson: A woman who Zoe meets in the grocery store while shopping with her uncle in the beginning of the novel. She is rude to Zoe and Henry and calls them both liars when she says they have “quick tongues”. (23-24)

Helen and Franklin Cavanaugh: Old friends of Henry’s from New York who came to have Thanksgiving. Helen is also an artist. (141)

Curtis: The hunter who tries to help the mayor capture Wil and sister.
